Pictured is the present Putney Bridge being built on the left with the old bridge to the right.
Putney Bridge will close for repairs on the 14th July 2014. No traffic will be allowed and only a path for pedestrians will stay open. Originally it was said the work would take six months but the Council now hope it will be completed by the end of October.
Better news is that a new cycle and foot bridge has been proposed by Wandsworth Council. It has been approved by both Wandsworth and Hammersmith and Fulham Councils. To be called The Diamond Jubilee Bridge it will connect Imperial Wharf on the Fulham side of the River to Battersea on the South side. It will run along the existing listed railway bridge. It is hoped that a corporate sponsor will be found so the there will be no cost to the tax payer.
Another pedestrian bridge, an entirely new garden bridge is being proposed by Joanna Lumley and others, to link the South Bank with the Temple on the north bank.
