Recent Recognition of a Committee Member’s Work for the Society and an insight into the Work of the Society’s Committee Members new

Those Members of the Society who receive the Newsletter will be aware of what the Committee do throughout the year carrying out their duties, but those non-Members who are interested in our work may wonder what we actually do! An article sometime ago in the Fulham Chronicle in an interview with our new Chairman at the time said that when most of us are going home to a quiet evening or weekend, Members of the Committee get going! We sift through hundreds of planning applications each year; we visit many locations to check the application; we send our views in to the Council; we meet developers to discuss their applications; we keep a very close eye on applications for listed buildings and buildings on the Local Register, where, for example, ancient sites might be affected, or old planning laws or covenants might have been overlooked; we take a great interest in the  historic buildings in the borough, especially Fulham Palace, where we are represented on the Management Committee; we carry out pro-active work such as our  recent survey of the Thames River Walk, which has been sent to the Council for inclusion in their new strategy for the Walk; we were the original creators of ‘Celebrating Fulham’, the cultural week put together each July in association with the Council; we think about traffic, transport, street furniture open spaces and parks and more.

We are delighted that one of our leading Committee members – Maya Donelan, has been recognised with the award of the MBE in the recent New Year’s Honours. Maya has been on the Committee for over twenty years, our Secretary for ten years and for many of those years was our lead on planning applications. Fulham Society is not her only civic activity. She is also chairman of Bishop Creighton House, a long established charity working with other community groups and citizens; a Committee member of the Historic Building Group, which concentrates on the preservation of historic buildings in the Borough and of  the Victorian Society. You can see that she richly reserves her MBE and we join in sending her our congratulations.”
